Hello fellow watch enthusiasts,
I'm David Richardson, the founder of Strap Monster, and today I want to share with you something deeply personal and close to my heart. Among the myriad of choices in my collection, there's one watch and strap combo that I always reach for: the Seiko King Turtle, affectionately known as the "grenade," paired with our Byron FKM+ in 22mm Green.
The Watch: Seiko King Turtle
The King Turtle (SRPE05K) is more than just a watch to me; it's a symbol of a significant time in my life, marking the culmination of important goals and some profound changes. Its textured waffle dial, reminiscent of a grenade, and robust features like sapphire glass, ceramic bezel, and 200m waterproofing, make it a watch that's as tough as it looks.
I've worn this watch through the bustling streets of Southeast Asia, in and out of water, through humidity, heavy activities, and even some blood, sweat, and tears. It's been my constant companion on adventurous hikes, thrilling dives, and serene sunsets. It's seen the highs and lows, and it still looks as good as the day I bought it. Yes, it has a cyclops and a misaligned bezel, just like me, it's not perfect.
The Strap: Byron FKM+ in 22mm Green
The Byron FKM+ strap in green is the perfect complement to the King Turtle's dial colour. Made of FKM, it's endured everything I've thrown at it, from rugged adventures to daily wear. Whether it's been soaked in saltwater or covered in mud & sweat, a quick rinse brings it back to its original glory.
The vented strap does, in my opinion, make it more comfortable to wear in extreme heat & humidity. Easy to clean and still looking like new, it was as equally at home in the water or in a restaurant, it's a testament to quality and durability.
Why This Combo?
Sentimental value aside, this combo resonates with me aesthetically, echoing the classic Seiko diver styling in the case shape, indices, and handsets. It's become part of me, a reliable and comfortable extension that I know will take whatever comes my way. It's not just a watch; it's a reflection of my personality and travel buddy that's shared some amazing experiences with me.
As a go-to, this combo is an easy choice for everyday wearing. As such, it's become the foundation of what my future watch collection will look like, this will be my "beater" and I believe that moving forward, this may also be the only Seiko I retain. (tough choices still to be made)
Looking Ahead
I hope this glimpse into my personal choice has piqued your interest. Watches are more than just timepieces; they are storytellers, marking moments and journeys in our lives. The King Turtle and Byron strap tell my story, and I can't wait to hear yours.
Stay tuned for an upcoming article where I'll dive into what other watches will be staying in my collection. The choices are diverse, intriguing, and each has its own tale to tell. From vintage classics to modern marvels, I look forward to sharing more of my watch journey with you, exploring the aesthetics, mechanics, and emotions that make each piece unique.
Until next time, David Richardson, Founder of Strap Monster
